Estimating Board Feet

Estimating Board Feet

Board feet in lumber is not a measure of length, it is a measure of volume.

One board foot is equivalent to a piece of wood 12" wide, by 12" long, by 1" thick.

A piece of wood 6" wide, by 12" long, by 2" thick would also equal one board foot.

This table shows the conversion factors for lineal feet to board feet - that is, it shows the number of board feet in one lineal foot of each size of board.  This makes total board feet easy to calculate - just take your length x the conversion factor.

For example: Twelve 10' sticks of 1x6 is 120 lineal feet. The conversion factor for 1x6 is .5, so this order is 120' x .5= 60 board feet.

Estimating Flooring/Siding

Estimating board feet for interlocking planks can be tricky. Use the conversion factors on this table to calculate the amount needed, allowing for width lost in dressing or lapping.

To estimate the board feet or surface measure of lumber required, multiply the area to be covered in square feet by the conversion factor listed for your pattern here. For end cutting and matching on the job, add 5-10%. For diagonal siding, add 15%.

For example, say you want to cover 75 sqft with 8" shiplap, allowing extra for end matching.  (75x1.15)+10%= 94.875 board feet
